- The Bay of Fundy is a bay between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, with a small portion touching the U.S. state of Maine. It is an arm of the Gulf of Maine and part of the Atlantic Ocean. It has the highest tidal range in the world,[2] averaging about 52 ft due to tidal resonance in its funnel-shaped basin. In one half-day tidal cycle, around 100 billion tonnes (110 billion short tons) of water flows in and out, twice the combined flow of all the world’s rivers.
I remember being in high school seeing pictures of boats tied up at the dock in the Bay of Fundy at high tide , floating even with the dock, and then at low tide lying on the sea bottom. Amazing! On this visit, we got to see it in person!
If you’re a nerd like Hank and want to understand “tidal resonance”, go to this page. Beware: Angie said Hank’s description will put normal people to sleep. : )
At low tide, very large mud flats are exposed. You can walk across the sea bottom. At Hopewell Rocks, you can see sculpted rock stacks 40 to 70 feet high that were shaped by the massive tides. These towers are mostly submerged at high tide, but at low tide you can walk around their bases on the sea floor.
- Most of the rivers that drain into the Bay of Fundy have a tidal bore, a wave front of the incoming tide that “bores” its way up a river against its normal flow.
These tidal bores create very wide openings of the river banks. At low tide, the water looks like a trickle at the bottom of an enormous trench.
We stayed at Fundy National Park. The nearby town of Alma is very small. There is one gas station/general store, which on the weekend we visited, had no regular or mid-grade gas – only premium. And only half the pumps were working. We found a couple of nice restaurants and a quiet, half-moon-shaped sandy beach where Charlie had a nice swim. Boy, were the mosquitos hungry, though! Angie’s botanical repellent was ineffective. Hank resorted to DEET – the nuclear option. We also deployed our 8×8 pop-up screen tent for the first time and it worked great!

❤️🥰🤓. Ummm, what a unique experience!
